It is easy to focus on the Apps and what they can do but what is really essential is the functionality afforded by those Apps. The emphasis needs to be on the functionality and not the App - the verb and not the noun (
not PowerPoint). Apps that perform a range of functions represent better value.
So for the iPad to be a constructive, effective learning tool what would be the basic set of Apps needed for :

(Free). If you need to annotate over PDF files then the highly featured

- for taking brief audio notes
(Free) is one of many free tools available, for larger and higher quality recordings
($5.49) has excellent podcasting features to record and share audio, to match audio recordings with written notes use
(Free) is a calculator with an important difference. Write what you want to know and the question and answer are presented in a number sentence form. Very useful for further number investigation.

(installed) which has all the features of a computer web browser. Apps such as
(Free) directly search Wikipedia and presents the information in an easy to read format.
- created content may be exported and shared in a variety of ways: a basic feature of all apps is the ability to email material, many apps support exporting to popular social network sites,
